The NOMIS Fellowship is a special opportunity for three outstanding early-career or experienced researchers working on creative and original projects about images. It focuses on how visuals are used and understood in science, art, and culture—as models, tools, or ways of thinking.

Since 2005, eikones has been a leading center for cross-disciplinary research on images, blending insights from the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. In 2026, NOMIS Fellows will examine how images shape our understanding of the world, challenge existing ideas, or spark new ways of thinking—through everything from scientific visuals and political imagery to influential artworks.

This 1-year fellowship starting on September 1, 2026, offers:

Eligibility Criteria:

The NOMIS Fellowship welcomes researchers from all backgrounds—whether in history, philosophy, sociology, physics, visual arts, biology, or other fields—who explore the role and meaning of images in how we understand and gain knowledge.

  • Applicants should have one of the following:
  • You’ve either published a full book (like a thesis) or
  • Written at least three peer-reviewed journal articles or academic papers
  • Your proposed research should explore how images are used or understood in science, culture, or society
  • Applications are accepted in both German and English
  • Fellows are expected to live in Basel and take part in university events and activities
  • A PhD is required to apply
