Japan TOKAS International Creators Program 2026 (Fully Funded)

This is a fully funded residency in Tokyo for creators and curators from around the world. It offers a chance to live, work, and explore your creative ideas in one of the world’s most inspiring cities.

There are three residency tracks available: the International Creator Program, Curator Program, and Research Program — each with different timelines. The maximum stay is up to 3 months. There’s no application fee, and all costs are covered.

Kinds of Residencies and Their Goals:

  • Art Residency for International Creators: Open to artists working in visual art, film, design, or architecture, this program offers a chance to create and grow in Tokyo.
  • Curatorial Work Stay Program: For those working in curating, art writing, or cultural studies
  • Creative Research Stay 2026: This program invites local and global artists to research Tokyo’s art and culture, in fields like visual art, film, design, music, performance, and curating.

Program Dates & Duration:

  • Starting May and finishing in July 2026
  • From early September through late November 2026
  • January to March 2027, from start to finish

Requirements:

Art Residency for International Creators:

  • Must live outside Japan.
  • Have at least 5 years of experience in their field.
  • Able to communicate well in English.
  • Duo applications allowed if one creator lives outside Japan.
  • Students can’t apply, except Ph.D. candidates.

Curatorial Work Stay Program:

  • Must live outside Japan.
  • Have at least 3 years of experience in their field.
  • Able to communicate clearly in English.
  • Duo applications are not accepted.
  • Students cannot apply, except for Ph.D. candidates.

Creative Research Stay 2026:

  • Open to creators from both around the world and Japan.
  • Centers on studying arts and culture in Tokyo.
  • Requires applicants to submit a clear research plan.
  • Mostly for professionals; students can apply only if they’re Ph.D. candidates.
