UK Standard Visitor Visa 2025: Eligibility and Application Process

In May 2025, the UK introduced a simpler Standard Visitor Visa to make short visits easier. This new visa lets people come for different reasons, like tourism, business meetings, short studies, medical treatment, or some paid work. The updated rules clearly outline who should apply, what activities are allowed, and how long someone can stay in the country.

Planning a trip to the UK? This guide breaks down all the important updates you should know for 2025.

Quick Guide: Visiting the UK with the New Standard Visa

The Standard Visitor Visa lets people from other countries come to the UK for up to six months. It’s great for different purposes—like going on holiday, joining a business meeting, taking a test, or getting medical care. This visa makes it easier for many types of visitors to travel to the UK.

Who’s Eligible to Apply?

You can use this visa if you’re coming to the UK for:

  • Exploring the UK
  • Spending time with family or friends
  • Doing volunteer work with a UK charity (short-term)
  • Passing through the UK
  • Short business trips for meetings or interviews
  • Paid work activities
  • Short recreational courses
  • School exchange trips
  • Professors, senior medical doctors, or dentists
  • Healthcare services

Things You’re Not Allowed to Do with This Visa:

  • Doing any kind of work, paid or unpaid, for a UK business or on your own
  • Claiming government benefits
  • Getting married or having a civil partnership (you’ll need a Marriage Visitor Visa for that)
  • Using repeat visits to live in the UK isn’t allowed

Requirements:

  • You must go back home when your visit ends
  • You can afford your trip and support your family without using public benefits
  • You can afford your travel after leaving the UK
  • You don’t plan to use repeated or long stays as a way to live in the UK
  • You have a valid passport or travel ID for your visit.

Need a Visa or Not? Let’s Check:

  • Make sure to apply for a Standard Visitor visa before you travel.
  • Visa-free travelers must get an ETA before coming to the UK.
  • You don’t need a visa or ETA to enter, but you still have to meet all the rules.

How to Apply:

  • Submit your application online at least three months before you travel.
  • The usual six-month visa fee is £127.
  • Passing through the UK? A Visitor in Transit visa costs £70.
  • If you visit often, you can get a long-term Standard Visitor visa that lasts 2, 5, or 10 years, but each stay can only be up to six months.

Visa Application at UK Entry:

You may not need a visa, but you must follow all rules. UK border agents could request proof of:

  • Your ticket back home
  • Your travel plans and place to stay
  • Having enough funds
  • The reason for your trip
